Our Streets Day of Action in Denton

THE Our Streets Campaign had Denton town centre firmly in its sights this week for another productive day of action targeting fly-tippers and litterbugs.

Council officers, residents and businesses teamed up once again to tackle fly-tipping hotspots and clean up dumped waste and litter. With Ashton and Droylsden already under their belts in August and September, this was the third day of action across Tameside town centres which has helped boost the everyday work of the officers who work to keep the streets cleared and take action against people who illegally dump waste.

Action taken included:

Officers visited commercial premises and residential properties to ensure the correct bins were in place.

18 Waste Duty of Care visits were carried out to businesses. Of those, 17 have contracts in place for the disposal of their waste. One premises will require follow up.

22 contaminated recycling bins dealt with.

One statutory notice was served on a land-owner regarding a large accumulation of waste which could attract or harbour vermin.

Engagement work with dog-walkers in Victoria Park to ensure they understand their responsibilities after complaints raised about dog fouling and dogs off lead.

There are lots of ways that residents can get involved in cleaning up their area and help share responsibility for their area and behaviour. Litter picks, sharing messages and reporting inconsiderate parking or waste dumping can all help to make a difference.

Cllr Vimal Choksi, Tameside Council Executive Member (Towns and Communities), said: “The Our Streets campaign has once again shown that working together is the most effective way to clean up our town centres and is highly effective in the fight against fly-tippers and litterbugs and generally keeping our streets tidier and cleaner for the benefit of all the local community.”

Cllr Denise Ward, Tameside Council Executive Member for Environmental Services, said: “Everyone can get involved, whether it’s by joining a community clean-up or litter pick, reporting fly-tipping or getting in touch about litter problems and dog fouling. The days of action are a great way to invigorate pride in our town centres and neighbourhoods and show the strength or joining council resources with local community knowledge.”
